Rolls-Royce’s first EV is the $413,500 Specter coupe

Rolls-Royce has officially started the transition to electric cars. The luxury British manufacturer has revealed his first EV, the Specter coupe. The Phantom’s “spiritual successor” looks a lot like its stately gas-powered counterparts (apart from a low drag coefficient of 0.25), but promises to be even quieter and smoother thanks to its powerplant. The brand is still finalizing specifications. However, it expects the four-wheel drive machine to sprint from 0-60 MPH in 4.4 seconds and reach an EPA range of 260 miles. Those aren’t exceptional numbers, but the emphasis here is on a pampered ride, not absolute performance.

That decision is reflected in the interior. The design includes the now mandatory instrument and infotainment screen, plus a digital passenger dashboard. In keeping with Rolls-Royce’s bespoke design philosophy, you can even let the company customize the color of the on-screen dials. An “Eleanor” assistant can handle tasks in the car, and a Whispers app can both send managed location recommendations (such as restaurants) and remotely control the car’s basic functions, such as the locks and heating.

This isn’t just a reworked version of the company’s existing designs. The Specter uses a new aluminum platform (the “Architecture of Luxury”), tailored for EVs, and features “starlight” doors with 4,796 light points. It’s very large for a coupe 16 feet long and 6.6 feet wide, and even needed the company’s first 23-inch wheels in more than a century. This is for relaxing soirees and trips to the golf club, not for total blast down country lanes.

The Specter is available to order now, with first deliveries expected in Q4 2023. Pricing starts at $413,500 in the US, but that’s before the customization process — expect to pay significantly more to get the design just like that, right down to the colors of the signature indoor umbrella. Even more so than rival ultra-luxury EVs like the Cadillac Celestiq and the forthcoming Mercedes-Maybach EQS, this is aimed at customers who will do whatever it takes to get their dream car.
