My best days are booked by my two favorite drinks: coffee and wine. (Note how I said my . best days and not each day? Wink.) So, why are these two my non-negotiable drinks? Well, while very different in taste and function, both drinks share two essential qualities: they are absolutely delicious and they both require a bit of a ritual in preparation. Just as heating water, grinding coffee and preparing my French press is a pleasant and meditative start to my day, chilling wine and uncorking the bottle by hand feels like a grounding closure.
My favorite part of both my morning and evening rituals is that gentle moment when my beautiful drink sits in its cup, ice cubes jingling together, perfectly prepared and poured, waiting for me to take a sip. This is where my glass choice comes into the picture. The vessel I drink from can really make or break the experience. I prefer a glass that feels special: something lightweight, elegant, durable and safe from my tendency to knock things over. But it wasn’t until I tried Material’s new glassware that I realized it’s possible to own a glass worthy of all liquids — water, wine, juice, coffee, you name it.
You may have read that I or my Kitchn colleagues have been singing Material’s praises in the past. The brand DTC has perfected the art of form meets function when it comes to kitchen essentials by combining tradition, quality materials and thoughtful design. And like their widely acclaimed reBoard and table knives, Material seems to have hit the nail on the head again with their all-new glassware. The glasses are available in two sizes, as Full Glass Set and as Half glass set. While I find myself often reaching for both sizes, there’s no doubt that in practice the Full size is the most versatile (and most beautiful) piece of glassware I’ve ever owned.
As you can see, the glasses are designed with superior elegance in mind, with two half-domes forming the base and stem of the glass. I find myself wanting to drink anything, even if I’m just trying to meet my daily H2O quota. The unique shape allows for plenty of volume (important for those larger glasses of wine after a long day) and the beautiful pieces stack easily – a bonus for those of us with minimal cupboard storage.
Form aside, let’s chat. There is one key element that sets these glasses apart from the rest of my drinkware arsenal: they are made from borosilicate glass. Although I only drink iced coffee, if I ever want to drink hot tea or cocoa or pour my hot coffee into the glass before adding ice, I never have to worry about the cup cracking, cracking or breaking. l love that despite the delicate, thin walls, these things are practically as strong as the Pyrex dish I bake brownies in. Because I use them so often and they are so durable, I can throw them in the dishwasher without worry. (There’s nothing more annoying than hand-washing glassware, if you ask me!)
The glasses just launched yesterday on Material’s website and are eligible for the brand’s early Black Friday discount (just enter the discount code SET THE TABLE to save $13 per set when you order). If you like drinking in style I really couldn’t recommend these bangers more. Because they’re versatile enough to hold all your favorite drinks and blending seamlessly into a ton of different decor styles, I also think they would make a great gift for a design-conscious friend, wine lover, or a loved one who owns an apartment for the first time. Make sure to get a set too, while you’re at it!
