REI Co-op Flash 22 Pack

Photo: RI

This is one of the best daypacks for the money. It’s light at just 14 ounces, so it won’t strain your back, but it has well-padded shoulder straps and two exterior water bottle pockets, which many small backpacks miss. It has a capacity of 22 liters, which is more than enough for a raincoat, lunch, water, a sweater and maps for an afternoon of hiking. There also is a version with graphic prints available for the same price.

If you enjoy getting away from it all but keep a lifeline handy in case something goes wrong, a satellite communicator can keep you in touch with emergency services and loved ones back home. You can share your location, communicate back and forth and activate an SOS button if you need a rescue. The InReach Mini 2 weighs only 3.5 grams and is compact enough to take up little space in a pocket. The battery lasts about four to fourteen days, depending on settings and tree cover. Sure, the new iPhone 14 can do all of this, but it won’t help if the battery runs out after a day.

The Trail Hut 2 tent strikes the right balance between price, weight and quality. The hardware, such as zippers and guy ropes, is solid, and the 78-ounce weight — while not feather light — isn’t terribly heavy either. The interior design is well laid out with interior pockets and two doors and vestibules. It’s great if you plan on hiking alone and want room inside for backpacks or gear. If you plan to sleep in a tent with two or three people, take a look at the Trail Cabin 4 ($209), which is mostly the same but bigger (and also for sale). Read our guide to the best tents for more information.

Foam sleeping mats alone are not warm enough for cold weather camping. To isolate you and your sleeping bag from the winter ground, opt for an inflatable model like this one. The NeoAir is an excellent insulator, plus it’s lightweight at 12 ounces and packs down to a small roll. Speaking from experience, it’s plenty warm when the mercury dips low.

Liquid fuel stoves are among the strongest you can take inland. The downside is that they are often noisy and spoil the silence of nature, but the WhisperLite is relatively quiet compared to others. Gas heaters can present performance issues in the dead of winter, but MSR’s bombproof WhisperLite will keep kicking through almost any weather.

Hiking while holding a flashlight is getting old and it’s almost impossible to pitch a tent in the dark while trying to hold one. Free your hands with a headlamp. The Spot 400 is a classic, reliable model that can cast 400 lumens up to 100 meters down the trail on its high setting. The three AAA batteries last 200 hours on the six-lumen low setting, which is plenty for base camp chores like getting ready for bed.

Garmin Fenix 7S Sapphire Solar

The 7S Sapphire Solar (8/10, WIRED Recommends) is a powerhouse for all preset modes that can track your biometric data from various outdoor activities: gravel biking, swimming, running and more. It’s our favorite outdoor watch for its fast and accurate GPS connection in the rain and under dense vegetation, plus it has a built-in altimeter, barometer and compass. Women’s sizing, Men’s sizing

It’s no wonder we named them the cutest in our guide to the best trail running shoes. Check them out. However, beauty is not only deep in the skin. They are light, breathable and offer a firm grip on loose terrain. Remember, Nikes run small, so you should consider going up a half size.

Sanding is no fun. Whether you’re wearing the latest high-tech cycling shorts or sticking to a tried-and-true pair of jeans, throw on some padded cycling shorts underneath to take some wear and tear off your bike. The stretchy, breathable polyester fabric wicks away moisture so you don’t feel soggy on long rides.

We’ve awarded these as the best cold-weather running tights in our guide to the best running gear, thanks to a high-rise waist and a drawcord that keeps them from slipping down on your run. As an insulating base layer under trousers, they add a lot of warmth in rough weather. Even in 30 degree temperatures, they kept our reviewer warm and lasted for years with little wear. One downside is that they only come in a 28-inch seam, which can cause taller runners to get cold ankles.

Goose down jackets are only getting more expensive, but REI’s house brand down puffy has been the same base price for years. Now it’s on sale at a price that is rarely matched and never beaten. Two zippered handwarmer pockets on the outside are connected by two cavernous open pockets on the inside of the jacket that can hold beanies, gloves and scarves. It is warm as an outer layer or an insulating mid layer.

This is my favorite outdoor folding chair and it is made of robust aluminum, 300 denier nylon fabric and solid wood armrests. It weighs 7 pounds 7 ounces and can hold up to 250 pounds. There is a padded version also on sale for the ultra-low price of $22, but it’s often in and out of stock; make a note to look at it another time to see if the deal comes back.

I’ve crowned the Big Haul as the best duffel bag in my Best Travel Bags guide because it’s made from Bluesign-approved recycled nylon fabrics and has plenty of interior and exterior pockets for organization, as well as hidden backpack straps so you can carry heavy loads on your back . Anyone who’s ever lugged a super-heavy duffel bag through an airport will appreciate that. This 28-litre version is perfect for weekend getaways and is small enough to use as hand luggage when flying. There are more sizes on saleall the way up to a massive 120 liter version.
